Blackcote is non-porous and will not crack, chip or peel when properly applied according to directions. It has amazing scratch and abrasion resistance and is similar in strength to regular POR15 Rust Preventive Coatings. Blackcote is not sensitive to ultra-violet light and may be exposed to sunlight without damaging consequences. Blackcote has excellent adhesion characteristics and may be applied over POR15 Rust Preventive Paint months or years later with proper preparation.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

I’ve been using POR15 Rust Preventive Paint for years. Can I use BLACKCOTE instead and get the same rust protection?
No. You can use Blackcote on bare steel and get good protection but it is not comparable to POR15 Rust Preventive Paint, which penetrates into the pores of the metal and chemically bonds with the surface. Use Blackcote as a topcoat over POR15 to get the best possible rust protection.

What do I do to put Blackcote over the top of POR15?
The best way to apply Blackcote over POR15 is when the last coat you have done of POR15 is tacky (which will be in about 2½-3 hours), then apply the Blackcote. If you have let the POR15 cure then give it a light sand with 600 grit, just to take the gloss off the POR15.

Come on now! I’ve put Blackcote on bare steel and have gotten a terrific bond. It sure looks as good as a POR15 coating on bare steel or metal. Isn’t it just possible you're only trying to sell me another can of paint?
Absolutely not! Side-be-side, panels were tested under a variety of conditions, and the POR15 coating was shown to be clearly superior in preventing oxidation and corrosion. Try it yourself and you'll see. Though Blackcote will easily out-perform other coatings on bare steel, its greatest value and best use is as a topcoat over POR15 Rust Preventive Paint.

How does Blackcote work over other painted surfaces?
Very, very well. There are many occasions when you want corrosion protection over a surface and you can’t remove the old paint. Simply clean that surface with a wax and grease remover, like Marine Clean then topcoat with Blackcote.

Is Blackcote the “perfect” topcoat, or does it have drawbacks I should know about?
Unfortunately, nothing is perfect in this world, not even Blackcote. Like POR15, it won’t come off your hands if you let if dry; it will harden in the can if you leave the lid off and dip your brush directly in the can; it may occasionally have some tiny imperfections in its finish, so we can’t call it a perfect cosmetic coating; and finally, it is certainly not inexpensive. It’s very difficulty to make, and the base resins are very expensive, but we’ve never let cost stop us from making the best coatings money can buy. Blackcote is one of those coatings.

RECOMMENDED NOTE: Organic vapour particule respirators, NIOSH/MSHA approved or full air in-flow mask must be used when spraying Blackcote. If brushing paint in a well ventilated area. Always wear gloves.

IMPORTANT: Blackcote contains isocyanates therefore use of full breathing gear is advised. We suggest you wear overalls and gloves as well as covering up as much of your skin as possible.
